Food and Fiber for the 21st Century is packed full of lessons that can be integrated into the curriculum areas of math, language arts, social studies and science. Written to grades 1-6, the resource guide uses as its foundation a unit entitled The Importance of Agriculture.
The Earth Under Our Feet shows how every living thing depends on the soil, either directly or indirectly. Lessons in Plants We Eat, Wear and Use cover the major crops grown in Texas. Students learn that many of the products we use every day are made directly from agricultural crops or from their by-products. Plant Science Activities contains lessons on the structure and function of plant parts, plant parts we eat and plant science activities for student investigation.
Livestock in Our Lives has lessons about beef and dairy cattle, sheep and goats, and poultry. Students learn how livestock in Texas benefits us both socially and economically. What the Heck is BioTech? teaches students the basics of heredity and genetics. Students learn how, through scientific research, the food we eat, clothes we wear and all the other things we use every day, are made better.
All lessons are correlated to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) and also address objectives for the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS).
Units are available individually or bound in a three-ring binder. Also available on CD. Click here to download free lessons.
